A big challenge facing second-time buyers is getting the property chain to work for them. According to Joey Sheehan, Head of Credit at MyMortgages.ie suggests that if you are relying on the equity in your current home as your deposit in your new home, banks will want you to sell your home before they will let you draw down a new mortgage.

with Kevin Johnson, CEO of the Credit Union Development Association (CUDA)

Q: I need to borrow €500 and was going to get it from the local moneylender – is that the handiest and quickest option?

Firstly, no matter where you take a loan from, CUDA’s advice is to only borrow if you believe, with certainty, that you can afford to repay the loan out of your current income. That applies whether your income is a social welfare benefit or salaried income. Credit unions have an ethos of supporting those in their local community, which means they are likely to do their utmost to assist you.
